Reconstruction 1865-1877


  • Period following the civil war 
  • no seceding military officer or politicians were tried for treason 
  • If 10 % of citizens swore allegiance to the union they could stay ( from confederacy ) 
  • had to ratify 13,14,15 ammendments 
  • 13th- abolished slavery 
  • 14th - defined citizenship 
  • Black an : right to vote ( 15th) 
  • Andrew Jhonson 
  • former senetor from tennesee 
  • didn't oppose slavery 
  • Dolly has kids possibly by Andrew Jhonson 
  • Jefferson Davis 
  • was pardoned 
  • Andrew Jhonson was taught to punish the south by Radical Republicans but had no interest 
  • Freedman's Bureau tried to help negros 
  • hampered apathetic agents and  congress 
  • jhonson vetoed a bill to fund freedmans Bureau and disbamded in 1872 
  • Jhonson fought proposals to redistribute land 
  • KKK established in Paloski Tennesee 
  • Tenure of Office Act prohibited the president from removing federal officials without consent of the senate 
  • Jhonson fired Edward Stanton who was an ally of the radical republicans 
  • republicans then nominated grant 
  • used military to suppress KKK 
  • Samuel J. Tilden supported by Republicans with Hayes in the white house Reconstruction cam to an end
